Winter Timeline 2025/26

No, there was no consensus in terms of long-term forecasts for this winter, albeit more reputable meteorologists’ model pointed at warmer than average cold season.

 

The record-late incidence of heat was followed by a cold blast. In many places in Poland first frosts were observed in the last days of September. In Warsaw first ground frost was reported on 2 October 2025 and the first frost (dawn-time low of –1.2C) on 3 October 2025. It was the earliest first frost since 2001, occurring 15 days earlier than long-term average. October 2025 as the coldest since 2016, though in line with long-term average, deserved a separate summary.

 

The first half of November 2025 was relatively warm and frost-free, then the second half made up for it. The winter timeline is launched later than in 2024 (21 November), 2023 (17 November) or 2022 (17 November), but earlier than in 2021 (26 November) or 2020 (30 November).

23 November 2025
After a frosty night flurry begins around 8:00 a.m. and with some little breaks keeps slowly falling until evening. Not warmer than –1C.

24 November 2025
Snow falls on and off. Temperature crawls above 0C after sunset, suggesting nasty conditions ahead.

25 November 2025

Late autumn returns, with fogs, poor air quality, intermittent drizzle and nasty deficiency of sunshine (except for 2 hours before sunset on 4 December and 1 hour around midday on 8 December). Temperature ranging from 0C to +9C. Not a sign of actual winter in sight.

Forecasters predicted record-breaking warmth, while temperature creep into low double-digits, with remarkably high night-time lows close to +10C. Some rainfall, some sunshine.

Getting colder, sliding from mid-autumn to late autumn.

Snow showers and mild thaw. Winter gives a little relief, although the snow cover on New Year’s Day is the highest since… January 2013. It occurs to me it might be the only incidence of above-zero temperatures this month.

January 2026 was anomalously cold. Average temperature in Warsaw was –5.5C (vs. long-term average of –1.5C). It was the fifth coldest month in Warsaw in the twenty-first century, after:
1. January 2006 (–8.3C),
2. January 2010 (–8.0C),
3. December 2002 (–6.6C),
4. February 2012 (–6.1C).

Getting warmer day by day, into warmth abnormal for this time of year (well into double digits on the last two days of the month), which is a pleasant anomaly after weeks of enduring temperatures lower than average. Sunshine brings a smile on my face. Gusty wind does not let one feel like in April.

February 2026 was cold. Average temperature in Warsaw was –2.5C (vs. long-term average of –0.4C). This means we had two colder than average months in a row in Warsaw for the first time since April and May 2021 (for winter months since February and March 2018). Stats:
- month-time high: +16.3C on 28 February 2026 (colder than in late February in 2021 and 2024),
- month-time low: –19.5C on 3 February 2026 (ghastly, with wind chill of –27C),
- the warmest day: 28 February 2026 (daily average of +7.3C),
- the coldest day: 2 February 2026 (daily average of –15.3C, the coldest day in Warsaw since 18 January 2021),
- number of days with snow cover: 23, snow cover continued to lie on the ground in Warsaw for 55 consecutive days, the longer streak since 2009/10 winter (62 days in a row then).
- the highest snow depth: 20 centimetres, on 4 February 2026 and 5 February 2026.

Monthly temperature amplitude in February 2026 reached 35.8 Celsius degrees, which is the third-highest such measurement in Warsaw. The record set in March 1971 of 40.2 Celsius degrees (low of –21.6C on 5 March 1971, high of +18.6C on 21 March 1971, i.e. mere 16 days later) is awfully difficult to beat and March is probably the only month when it stands a chance to be beaten.

A boring weather pattern: sunshine from all to dusk, no rainfall (disturbingly), morning lows between –4C and +1C, afternoon highs between +10C and +17C.

11 March 2026 – 15 March 2026
A similar pattern to the one from the first decade of the month, with exception of lack of frost at dawn and with warmer afternoons (up to +19C). Still no precipitation!

16 March 2026 – 25 March 2026
Colder than in previous days, yet substantially warmer than it should be at this time of year. Some occasional showers, yet far too little to make up for deficiency of precipitation from the beginning of the year.

Finally a long-awaited rainfall and the only day this month with day-time high below +10C.

27 March 2026 – 31 March 2026
Colder than over the most of the month, retreating from spring in full swing towards pre-spring.

March 2026 was abnormally warm, actually the warmest since records began. Average temperature in Warsaw was +7.7C (vs. long-term average of +3.2C and current record of +7.2C set in 2007). Stats:
- month-time high: +18.9C on 14 March 2026,
- month-time low: –3.7C on 7 March 2026,
- the warmest day: 14 March 2026 (daily average of +12.1C, a May-like weather),
- the coldest day: 6 March 2025 (daily average of +3.8C, the coldest day being warmer than long-term mean for the entire month),
- number of days with snow cover: 0.

In terms of precipitation, it was the second driest March in Warsaw since records began, with total precipitation of mere 2.7 millimetres (March 2022 with 1.7 millimetres remains unbeaten).

 

The winter is definitely over. Today the temperature in Poland’s capital may hit +20C for the first time this year. In the coming days we will cope with an inflow of cold here past the Easter and have to endure a few frosty morning, but hopefully the long-awaited spring will soon be in overdrive.

Not a winter (wonderland) we have got used to

One of the goals of my annual winter timelines, written since 2010/11 season, is keeping track of day-to-day weather changes in one of two periods of a year most affected by climate changes. The sixteenth one is hence in the making. Winters generally tend to be warmer, wetter, with more rainfall and less snow. But as the atmosphere gets warmer, the risk of extreme events rises. As some regions of the world are facing unprecedented for this time of year heat (such is the case for most of the USA since around Christmas), others must counterbalance this with periods of abnormal cold.

Temperature-wise, we have been far from record-breaking chill. In the first days of January temperatures were close to long-term average for the period. Just recently it got markedly colder, yet even with temperature decreasing to –15.4C yesterday morning, Warszawa Okęcie weather station readouts have barely hits their 5-year lows (–20.6C was measured here on 18 January 2021) and are still well above twenty-first century records (–27.1C on 23 January 2006) or low officially reported in post-war period (–30.7C on 8 January 1987).

Snow-wise, after a series of snow-sparse winters, recent conditions are what we are no longer accustomed to. One must also say precipitation of 50 centimetres daily as reported in several places across northern Poland are not what we capable of combating. Such amounts of snowfalls have statistically been witnessed around twice in a century and were not, unlike some claim, typical several decades ago. In Warsaw snow cover got higher than 40 centimetres only three times after 1951:
- in 1970: between 22 February and 5 March (the 1969/70 winter was all-in-all the harshest in post-war history of Poland),
- in 1979: between 6 January and 8 January, between 18 January and 20 January, then between 30 January and 27 February,
- in 2010: between 13 February and 19 February.

This year, hitting such mark is not particularly likely. The snow fallen in late December and early January has already subsided, brining snow cover below 20 centimetres. The current forecasts suggest we may count on some snow top-up, but in a few days it will begin to melt. I keep fingers crossed for a thaw setting in.

I am not one of those fond of proper winter. I do not feel sorry for motorists (including myself, as roads are salted too well in comparison to slippery pavements), but this is a nuisance for people having to move about in general, pedestrians (who again, appear to be second-class citizens), all workers doing their jobs in the open air, elderly and disabled people often stuck at home due to the weather. I also feel sorry for those who cannot afford to heat their dwellings properly and to protect themselves from frostbites recourse to lousy incineration inputs. Many folks do so and you need no sensor to deteck awful air quality. On Friday I ran some 30 metres to catch a bus and I could feel the smell of hells knows what shit burnts in my lungs. Costs and inconvenience of harsh winter is hence borne by everyone, while few benefit or cherish it. On the other hand, harsh conditions shape tough people, so let’s cope with winter with fortitude!

Besides, once snow ceases to fall and sun brightens up short days, winter has its charm. Snaps dated 5 January 2026, from my first, post-flu short amble.

To the right, ul. Moczydłowska, serving mostly as a pedestrian precinct running towards Las Kabacki. Such standard of keeping non-major roads is absolutely sufficient. Other local roads kept in similar standard, with no salt in use.

The cabbage field between ul. Perkalowa and ul. Ziemska is a fascinating phenomenon. If sold for zillions, it could accommodate an estate of splendid terraced or semi-detached houses. But a local farmer prefers to grow vegetables here (note the spot is less than 15 minutes on foot from Metro Natolin).

The Kazurka hill was not chock full of children sliding down. Note benches and other objects downhill are covered with hay to prevent deadly incidents. I felt like scrambling up the hill, yet such effort could thwart my post-flu recovery.

The track running to Warsaw underground depot seems to have been out of use in early January, with snow trampled by walkers only. I still await the moment I catch a railcar on the infrequently used track.

The Oczko wodne Moczydełko pond has frozen over and is capped with snow. I would not hazard, however walking on it. Three days after the last thaw and with no double-digit frost since then, stepping on its icy surface seemed premature.

Out on another field, a man-made snowman, with eyes fallen off below nose. Plenty of other snow crafting works of art were erected in Ursynów during early days of the month, yet I felt still too weak to venture for a longer walk. Hope I catch up soon.

Winter Timeline 2024/25

Forecasts for the last winter consensually predicted above-average temperature and precipitation in all months and turned out be indeed warmer than average, but by no means remarkably warm and drier than average, especially in its second half.

 

October 2024 was frost-free in Warsaw, albeit temperature fell below +3C seven times (month-time low of +1.3C on 12 October 2024). The capital of Poland was one of few places in Poland which escaped negative temperatures over that month. Note 50% of recent ten Octobers were frost-free (2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2024). In the twentieth century first frost in November in Warsaw was a rarity.

 

The first frost (–2.8C) was measured on 3 November 2024. The first decade of November was abundant in morning frosts, yet average temperatures were late-autumn-like. Sleet was observed during rush hour on 14 November 2024.

First flurry observed in the morning, stays on the ground for a little while, but melts long before midday.

First proper snow. Begins to fall before dawn, settles for good, then only partly melts during the day.

March 2025 was extremely warm. Average temperature in Warsaw was +7.0C (vs. long-term average of +3.2C, at the par with March 2014 and March 2024, but colder than in March 2007, when temperature averaged out +7.2C). Stats:
- month-time high: +21.1C on 10 March 2025 (the earliest incidence of temperature above +20C in Warsaw ever, beating the previous record set on 17 March 2012),
- month-time low: –5.0C on 16 March 2025 (soon was the warmth missed),
- the warmest day: 10 March 2024 (daily average of +12.5C, a May-like weather),
- the coldest day: 17 March 2025 (daily average of +0.7C),
- number of days with snow cover: 0.

 

First days of April brought spring-like warmth, the afternoons bringing temperatures jus below +20C. The weather broke yesterday, with an inflow of an arctic mass of air. Temperature plunged, intense snow showers came on and off and continued overnight, but the snow did not linger. Average temperatures by the end of first decade of April are unlikely to be markedly above 0C, next snow showers are not unlikely, however even if the winter is not over now, its last gasp is near.

Winter Timeline 2023/24

Predictions for the passing winter varied greatly since late summer of 2023, due to unknown impact of El Nino, bringing both negative and positive anomalies in Europe. The consensus above forecasters was probably that Poland would experience both spells of warmth and cold snaps, but all in all the winter will be normal both in terms of temperature and snowfall.

The winter was preceded by a record-warm autumn, actually the warmest since records began.

First ground frosts were observed in Warsaw on 9 October 2023 and 10 October 2023 (temperature 2 metres above ground declined only to +0.5C). In most places in Poland first frosts were reported, while hilly southern regions were covered by a thin and quickly-melting blanket of snow. The first frost was measured on 18 October 2023, exactly in line with 1991-2020 average and its incidence was the earliest since 2016.

17 November 2023
The winter timeline is initiated exactly on the same day as in 2018 and 2022.
Flurry begins in the afternoon, by late evening some of the snow lingers, despite temperature just above 0C.

Intense snow showers on and off. The white powder is heavy and melts slower than it falls. Temperature gently above freezing most of the time.

- month-time low: –1.4C on 14 February 2024 (beating the previous record of the highest minimum temperature of –3.9C in February set in February 2020),
- the warmest day: 27 February 2024 (daily average of +11.1C, typical for last decade of April),
- the coldest day: 8 February 2024 (daily average of +0.4C, beating the previous record of the highest minimum average of –0.4C set on 7 February 2020, in other words this was the first February in Warsaw with no day with negative average temperature),

- the highest snow depth: not applicable, although we had a few snowflakes on the ground for an hour or two on 9 February 2024.

Was supposed to be sunny and warm, but clouds refused to roll away and temperature has barely exceeded +10C (vs. forecasts of +15C or more).

No longer with double digits, with inadequate supply of sunshine and spells of rain. The weather slowly drifts to how it should be at this time of year.

Warmer, day-time highs of more than +15C. Had my tyres (in the old Megane) changed on 28 March 2024, which was the earliest tyre change I ever had, after 3 years of getting this done in the second decade of April.

Early summer rather than early spring. Heat record for March is broken, namely +22.9C measured on 21 March 1974 is beaten with +24.4C.

31 March 2024
The record set yesterday does not last long, for the first time in history temperature in March in Warsaw exceeded +25C.

Changes

A short note written amid a hectic period to posterity (as nearly all recently) during two underground train rides.

Again, I have entered the phase of learning to live together. My girlfriend moved in to my flat a week ago. My one-bedroom 51 sqm place has become a kind of tiny, yet I bear in mind this is a temporary dwelling. The experience is different to the one I went through a few years ago, especially since I have invited a co-host to a space I had occupied for a longer while, instead of moving in to a flat rented together. We are doing some refurbrishments, preparing my girlfriend's flat before subletting, hence a lot is going on around.

Weather-wise, worth noting the current December is the "most wintry" since 2012. The average temperature in the first decade of the month had a material negative deviation, snow has been on the ground for over a week now. A mild thaw sets in today, but outlook for the second half of the month remains uncertain. Keeping fingers crossed for white Christmas anyway.

This year I am only a volunteer and a deputy leader in Szlachetna Paczka, with these role being far less time-consuming that last year. The circle keeps turning and people keep doing a good job, with a record number of 58 families from Ursynów receiving aid this year. I am proud to have had the contribution to set this machine in motion.

Corpo-wise, my workload has not eased up. Turning over a new leaf is due on 1 February - I am about to move to a parallel team dealing with more complicated transactions.  Lots of challenges ahead and with a bit of overstaffing out there I hope to have more space for recharging batteries.

The experience of the recent months has reinforced my dislike for life in haste. Being in constant rush is detrimental to physical and mental health, takes away pleasure from life, hampers relationships (all, not only romantic ones) and brings out a feeling of missing out on important things. The worst of all is the feeling that with such shortage of time I could not be a caring and committed father, fully involved in looking after children. The clock is ticking slowly, but the time seems to be running out too fast.

Winter Timeline 2022/23

The passing winter, with the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis, was definitely not expected to be cold. For several reasons everyone kept fingers crossed for a warm one and long-term forecasts pointed at above-average temperatures in central and eastern Europe. With hindsight – they have proven right.

After the coldest September since 2013, October 2022 came out as the sixth warmest since records began. Mean temperature in Warsaw reached +11.2C (vs. long-term average of +8.7C), but still was colder than October 1907 when temperature in Warsaw averaged out +12.9C and Octobers in 2000 (+11.6C), 1896, 1967 and 2019 (all +11.3C). October 2022 was also frost-free, just like in 2020, 2018 and 2017. Nevertheless, ground frosts were observed on four days (10^th, 12^th, 20^th, 21^st days of the month).

Usually when the first frost is witnessed so late, it bites sharply. Such was the case in 2008, 2017 and 2018.

I can only regret I spend the last days of 2022 and the first days of 2023 inWisła. Temperature in Warsaw soars to +18.9C (official readout from W-wa Okęcie station), beating the previous January record by more than 5 Celsius degrees and setting the new January warmth record for Poland. Clear blue skies and abundant sunshine do help.

- month-time high: +18.9C on 1 January 2023 (the previous record, +13.8C set on 12 January 1993, broken, I believe despite the global warming it will take two or three decades before the next January warmth record is set, I regret not experiencing it),

Exactly like at that time in 2022, a cyclone from above Scandinavia brings destructive gusty winds (above 100 kmph) and downpours.

A very light dusting of slow fallen overnight disappears quickly. Then snow falls during the day, but melts immediately while air temperature stands at +2C. Gusts of wind still strong.

Cloudy, but not rainy and moderately warm (with one night-time frost). Beware though, another short winter episode is in the offing!

February 2023 was warm. Average temperature in Warsaw was +1.4C (vs. long-term average of –0.4C). Stats:

- month-time low: –8.0C on 6 February 2023 (so far no double-digit frost in 2023),
- the warmest day: 21 February 2023 (daily average of +6.6C),
- the coldest day: 6 February 2023 (daily average of –5.3C),

- the highest snow depth: 6 centimetres from 4 February 2023 to 6 February 2023.

While in south-western edge of Poland I enjoy full sunshine, Warsaw is under the blanket of fog or clouds. Temperatures go through 0C two times a day.

4 March 2023 – 5 March 2023
Chilly, with alight dusting of snow and nasty wind. Negative temperature most of the time.

6 March 2023
Some moments of glorious sunshine follow the coldest morning this year. Then it begins to snow in near-zero temperature and snows, at time heavily until late evening.

The same pattern - I wake up to behold a white blanket covering the capital of Poland. It disappears by midday, melted by sunrays, as temperature tops +5C.

9 March 2023
It snowed all night, it snows nearly all day. Temperature on the verge of freezing, so some of the snow lingers.

It snowed at night, but the white powder disappeared soon, as temperature hit double digits for the first time since early January.

The weather continues to be changeable – quite warm morning with drizzle gives way to snow showers in the afternoon.

All of a sudden – Warsaw is haunted by a night-time frost, but then temperature skyrockets to double-digits despite overcast skies.

Cloudy, at times rainy and warm – temperature above +5C over the entire period (on two former days nearing +20C), but winter has not said its last word.

Biting chilly arctic wind makes +5C feel like –5C. Sadly, the assault of spring was short-lasting.

Warmer for a while, yet below +15C, spells of sunshine interspersed throughout rain showers.

March 2023 was warm. Average temperature in Warsaw was +4.5C (vs. long-term average of +3.2C). Stats:
- month-time high: +20.0C on 23 March 2023 (on the same day as in 2022),
- month-time low: –9.0C on 6 March 2023 (just like in 2022, year-to-date low is set in March),
- the warmest day: 24 March 2022 (daily average of +12.8C),
- the coldest day: 6 March 2023 (daily average of –2.3C),
- number of days with snow cover: 5,
- the highest snow depth: 3 centimetres on 9 March 2023 and 10 March 2023.

The last day of early spring. Bracing for the last touch of winter.

2 April 2023 – 6 April 2023
Winter (hopefully) gives its last gasp. Temperature between –5C and +8C. Most of the time gloomy as in November, but with some spells of sunshine. Worth noting –5.2C low measured on 5 April 2023 was the lowest temperature in Warsaw in April since 2003, while 5 April 2023 with average temperature of +0.1C was the coldest April day in the capital of Poland after 1950.

I hereby terminate the winter timeline, but according to long-term forecasts, we should not expect spring in overdrive and any incidence of +20C is a long way ahead. This will likely be the third April in a row substantially colder than long-term average (+9.2C for Warsaw). The tyre change due next Saturday.
